This is fast-growing deciduous tree that heights of around 50 feet high with a 30 to 40 foot spread. Mature trees have dark brown heartwood and white to pale brown sapwood. The heartwood is extremely durable.
Sissoo/Indian Rosewood is native to India, Pakistan and Nepal and is well suited to our dry southwest desert climate.
This tree is prized for its high quality beautiful dark brown wood. The wood is used for furniture, shipbuilding, musical instruments, skis, flooring and of course, wood turning. It is the second most important cultivated timber tree in India, after Teak.
Sissoo bowls can have a striking combination of dark heart wood and light colored sapwood. The wood is a favorite amongst turners who have access to this tree. It has been compared to cocobolo though not as dense.
